Alexi Amarista drove in four runs for the Guerreros de Oaxaca on Saturday night (early Sunday morning in Venezuela) in their 5-4 victory over the Diablos Rojos at the start of the final of the southern zone of the Mexican Baseball League (LMB).

Venezuelan Amarista went 2-for-3, his two hits a pair of home runs off American Trevor Bauer, Reds starter and Cy Young winner of the National League of Major League Baseball, in 2020.

American pitcher Salomon Bates got his second win in the postseason, while Bauer, one of the best pitchers in the regular season, got his first loss of the year in the LMB.

The Devils opened the scoring in the bottom of the first inning with a solo home run to right field by José Marmolejos, for 1-0.

The Venezuelan show

Amarista began his offensive production in the top of the third with a home run off Bauer, with which he took home Dominican Luis Barrera and Venezuelan Juniel Querecuto, for a 3-1 score.

Venezuelan José Pirela tied the score for the Reds in the third with a double that sent Franklin Barreto and Dominican Robinson Canó home for the 3-3 score.

The Warriors went back up on the scoreboard in the fourth, with a single to left by Barrera, which scored Colombian Reynaldo Rodriguez, who made it 4-3.

Alexi Amarista hit another home run in the fifth, this time a solo one, which left the game 5-3.

Mexico came close on the scoreboard in the eighth with a one-run homer by Juan Carlos Gamboa, making the final score 5-4.

The series will continue on Sunday night, with the second game, again at the home of the Diablos. Dominican Radhamés Liz will start for Oaxaca and Venezuelan Erick Leal will do so for the scarlet team.

Another commitment

In another game this Saturday, the Sultanes de Monterrey took a 2-0 lead in the final of the northern zone, defeating the Tecolotes de los Dos Laredos 7-6.

Victor Mendoza led the Sultan’s offense by going 2-for-5, with two teammates driven to the plate. Sasagi Sanchez was the winning pitcher, while American Donnie Hart was the loser.

This series will resume this Monday, in Dos Laredos, with starting pitchers to be announced.

Both the Oaxaca-Mexico duel and the Monterrey-Dos Laredos duel will end when one of the two wins four times and qualifies for the LMB final.
