In December 2016, Navalny began his campaign for the 2018 presidential election, but his registration was blocked by the Central Election Commission of Russia in December 2017. He appealed to the Supreme Court of Russia, but his appeal was rejected.

In May 2018, he was sentenced to 30 days in prison for participating in an unlicensed anti-Putin demonstration in Moscow.
