In the “Hiwar” program, Kaby Latif Al-Kateb hosts historian and lawyer Alexandre Najjar, who won the Grand Prix de la Francophonie in addition to other awards, to talk regarding his activity during the month of Francophonie, in addition to his management of the cultural forum “L’Orient Littéraire” in Lebanon and his role in supporting Francophonie.

Francophone cultural activity continues in Lebanon

Writer Alexander Najjar spoke regarding the cultural movement in Lebanon and referred to the activities of this movement, such as book fairs, theater, and also activities related to Francophonie. He focused on the importance of Francophonie as an opening for Lebanon and the Arab world to the world through dialogue with French-speaking countries while preserving Lebanese identity and Arab affiliation. He referred to the cultural supplement “L’Orient Littéraire”, which he expressed his pride in publishing since 2006 following a hiatus for years, praising the participation of a number of writers from Lebanon and France. He said that this supplement has a certain symbolism because it is one of the aspects of civilized Lebanon and it represents a kind of struggle for freedoms, in addition to devoting a special page to poetry out of belief in the status and importance of poetry, which was absent from magazines and newspapers in Lebanon as well as in the world.

A message of communication between Lebanon and the Francophone world

The Francophone writer and Lebanese lawyer Alexandre Najjar emphasized the importance of the Lebanese cultural presence in the Francophone world as a bridge of communication between Lebanon and the Francophone family, as he put it. He said that Lebanon is an active member of this organization through a number of Lebanese writers and intellectuals, such as Amin Maalouf, Sharif Majdalani, and others. This presence was described as culturally rich, which led to other countries participating in Francophonie activities, such as the UAE, which became an observer member in the organization. As for Beirut, Alexander Najjar mentioned that it is experiencing a broad cultural and theatrical movement despite the economic crisis, which constitutes an outlet for the Lebanese and is also what constitutes Lebanon’s cultural steadfastness.
