Alexander Schlager’s future role at FC Red Bull Salzburg is actually clearly defined.
“We want to continue playing with a young, talented goalkeeper. Alex should push the young goalkeepers in training and pass on his experience. If something happens, Alex is always there,” said “Bullen” sports director Christoph Freund at the presentation of the ÖFB goalkeeper in the city of Mozart.
Means: Schlager is the clear number two for the Austrian series champions, even if regular goalie Philipp Köhn should not stay.
Match practice is extremely important to Rangnick
One man doesn’t think much of this plan: Ralf Rangnick.
Since taking office, the ÖFB team boss has placed particular value on deployment time when it came to nominating his squad. So the German can’t really like that Austria’s one-time goalkeeper at club level will only have one place on the substitutes’ bench in the future, can he?
“Basically, it’s good and important for goalkeepers to play,” affirmed Rangnick at the press conference following the game between Austria and Sweden. In the same breath, the German also emphasizes Schlager’s strong performance in this game and the previous one in Belgium:
