Alexander De Croo in favor of a gas price freeze on a European scale

Prime Minister Alexander De Croo on Thursday said he was in favor of a gas price freeze across the European Union. If the market becomes irrational, we must intervene, explained the head of government to the Chamber before he left for Versailles where a European summit is being held.

The Russian invasion pushed up already skyrocketing energy prices. “I believe in the free market but it behaves today in a hysterical and completely irrational way”, underlined the liberal.

In his eyes, there can be no question of government intervention which, in the end, would benefit Russia. “If the stock market behaves irrationally, then the stock market is suspended. If the market behaves irrationally, then we have to intervene,” he said.
