Ecolo wants to put the tax reform project back on the table, but for the head of government, the priority is to carry out budgetary control.

Prime Minister Alexander De Croo is once morest the federal government reopening negotiations on tax reform. “I don’t think we have to spend a lot of energy on this,” he told Belga on Tuesday on the sidelines of a visit to the Volvo car factory in Ghent.

To his eyes, the number 1 priority of the Vivaldi coalition is now to carry out budgetary control.

The budget trajectory

According to the Prime Minister, a new attempt does not make much sense. “Let’s focus on the fiscal trajectoryis the number one priority. Can there be other things? Obviously, I’m not going to say no in advance, but the tax reform was not possible in July within our budgetary framework. The reason we didn’t do it is that it would have had a very heavy impact on our budgetary discussions, while the budgetary framework remains the same. So I don’t think we need to spend a lot of energy on that.”

Budgetary control is therefore the number one priority in September. “This one must be ready for the first half of October“, indicated the head of the federal government.

“We are waiting for the most recent figures from our administrations to see where we are, this budgetary control is crucial. Step by step, we must put this budget in safe waters. So far we have been able to stay within our budget trajectory and now we need to be able to continue.”
