Alexander Albon’s 7th-Place Finish at the 2023 Italian Grand Prix Highlights Surprising Lack of Pace

Alexander Albon feels his 7th-place finish at the 2023 Italian Grand Prix, matching Williams’ best of the season, masked a “surprising lack of pace”. Albon passed McLaren’s Lando Norris several laps at Monza and took the checkered flag in 7th place, his second 7th place of the season following the Canadian Grand Prix.

Williams’ package is known for its straight-line strength, but McLaren has a weakness in its low downforce configuration, which it is working to fix this season. Albon said the points scorer at Monza was due to Williams’ top speed strength, and the car was difficult to drive elsewhere. “It was tricky because the last corner was really weak,” said Albon. “Actually, it was good until Ascari, but I was slow at Turn 11 (Parabolica) and I was always catching up there.” It looks like it’s going to be a really tough race.’ “We didn’t have the pace today, but we had the speed on the straight line. I think I am.” “The braking in Turn 1 was almost enough. They had more downforce than us, but they mightn’t completely overtake. Every time I tried to outbrake, I tended to go wide.”Williams Racing are looking to finish seventh in the championship, 10 points behind Haas F1 Team, their best finish since 2017. Albon believes the team is in a strong position, but admitted he expects the upcoming races to be difficult for Williams. “I think it’s a good step. I’m worried regarding tracks like Brazil and this kind of racing,” said Alonso. “We’re in a better situation. I don’t think there’s a lot of chances in the next few races to Las Vegas, so it was necessary.” was what we needed Alexander Albon (Williams): “This may have been the toughest race for me, but it’s the race I’m most proud of so far and I’m very happy with it. I don’t think Lando enjoyed that race that much, but I did!We knew it was going to be a tough, long race today and we knew the tire deg was going to be high.Theoretically now. I think we went into the weekend expecting it to be a little bit faster and we knew it was going to be a long race on lap 4 following the race started but we managed to hold back. It was a tough race because I was wearing hard tires.I don’t want to do that kind of race once more, but I’m very happy with the result. It’s really fun to score points for two races in a row. From the beginning of the season to now It’s been great all the way through. I don’t think the next few races will be easy, so let’s enjoy it.”
