Austria’s number one has to bow to Alex de Minaur in two sets in the round of 16 in Mexico.
With the hard-fought 6:7 (7), 6:4, 7:6 (4) over the wildcard player Ernesto Escobedo (ATP 493), Sebastian Ofner was at the Abierto Mexicano Telcel presented by HSBC in Acapulco on Tuesday morning following CET returned to winning ways following four first-round defeats in a row. However, the 27-year-old was unable to add another sense of achievement to this opening victory: the current number nine in the world proved to be too strong for him this time on the night from Wednesday to Thursday following CET. The Styrian (ATP 37) had to admit defeat to third-seeded Australian Alex de Minaur 1:6, 3:6 in the round of 16 following around 1:28 hours of play. He was still able to secure 50 ATP points for the world rankings through his first round coup at the ATP 500 hard court tournament.
The clear defeat was primarily due to the impressive performance of de Minaur, who only committed three unforced errors in the entire match. Ofner had to give up his serve games twice over the deuce to make it 0-2 and (despite a 30-0 and 40-30 lead) to make it 0-4. He wasn’t granted more than the game of honor in the first set. The St. Mareiner started much better in the second section, but following an initial 2-0 lead including the game ball, they lost three contested games in a row to make it 3-0, each with the possibility of winning. He was no longer able to make up for the 2:3 deficit, and another service loss in the ninth game even brought the early decision to his disadvantage. Ofner now continues with his debut at the ATP Masters 1000 events in Indian Wells and Miami.
