In 2017, Alex Batty, an 11-year-old British boy, disappeared following going on vacation with his mother and grandfather to Malaga, Spain. Since then, his grandmother, Susan Caruana, was looking for him as she suspected that his mother, Melanie Batty, had taken him to join a sect.

This Wednesday, British authorities reported the appearance of the child in a town in Toulouse, France. Alex, now 17 years old, was seen alone on a route by a driver who became concerned and took him to a police station. There, he claimed that he had escaped from a supposed spiritual community.

Although the details of all his movements since his disappearance were not revealed, the minor testified that he had been in that country for at least two years and that “he was not ill-treated,” which was confirmed following he underwent a medical examination.

As reported by the BBC, the man who found him said he saw him carrying a backpack and a skateboard. At that moment, she felt “sorry” for him and invited him to get into the vehicle. There “they spent three hours together and the boy told him his story.”

In his story, the young man confirmed that he had been living with his mother in a type of itinerant community and that he was not obliged to remain in the place. However, he said that he “found his mother a little strange” and that he decided it was time to leave that type of life behind. For this reason, he decided to leave and walked for days.

After the driver helped him, Alex sent a message to his grandmother on Facebook saying he wanted to see her. In conversation with The Sun, Caruana revealed that she was able to talk to him: “I’m so happy. I spoke to him and he told me that he is fine.”

After his discovery, Batty was presented to the authorities and assisted by social services. Currently, he is in a juvenile center waiting for the British police to take him back to England.
