A fire in an apartment in the Matzleinsdorf high-rise in Vienna-Margareten triggered a major operation for the Vienna fire department on Friday evening. Because the fire broke out in a 20-story building with many residents, alarm level 2 was triggered. “16 vehicles and 65 emergency services responded,” fire department spokesman Jürgen Figerl told the APA. There were no injured people who would have had to be treated by the professional rescue service that had been deployed as a precautionary measure.

The Matzleinsdorf high-rise, built between 1954 and 1957, is considered a milestone in Vienna’s urban development. It houses more than 100 residential units. The building was the first high-rise building in the municipality of Vienna as part of the municipal residential building.

Yesterday’s operation was initiated around 7:30 p.m. by the “kitchen fire” alarm, the spokesman said. The flames were quickly brought under control using an extinguishing line and breathing apparatus. At the same time, the firefighters took measures to keep the smoke at bay: using high-performance fans and a so-called smoke curtain in front of the fire apartment, the smoke was prevented from spreading further up the staircase. No evacuations had to be carried out: “In this situation, it was safer for the residents to stay in their apartments because they were smoke-free,” said the spokesman for the professional fire department.

The surrounding floors were checked by respiratory protection teams. After regarding two hours, the operation was ended with the certainty that there were no injuries, reported Figerl.
