WASHINGTON (EFE).— A document from the FBI and the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) warns that “political division has provoked violence in the past” and that some radicals “see political and social tensions as an opportunity to use and promote violence for ideological purposes.”
The intelligence report, obtained by CNN, was drawn up in anticipation of possible attacks on the Democratic National Convention amid fears of retaliation for the attempted assassination of Donald Trump at a July 13 rally.
Thomas Matthew Crooks, 20, fired an assault-style rifle at an outdoor Trump rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, that day, wounding the former president in the ear and killing one member of the audience.
The investigation has not yet revealed the motive behind Crooks, who was shot dead by the Secret Service, but conspiracy theories spread by far-right groups on the Internet suggest, without evidence, that it was a plot by Democrats.
Both Republicans and Democrats condemned the security lapses committed by the Secret Service, forcing the resignation of its director Kimberly Cheatle.
The Democratic Convention will bring together some 50,000 people in downtown Chicago, including President Joe Biden and candidate Kamala Harris.
