Exactly one month from now, diver Alejandra Orozco will be one of those responsible for carrying the Mexican flag on the banks of the Seine River at the opening ceremony of the Paris 2024 Olympic Games.
The diver from Guadalajara says that being the standard-bearer for the delegation will mark her career and, at the same time, will give her extra energy to seek her third medal.
“More than pressure, it gives me motivation, commitment and strength to give my best on the day of my competition. You have to concentrate and focus on what you know how to do. For me, medals are built in training and we are preparing for that,” said Orozco.
The 2012 London Games were the first in Alejandra’s career. On that occasion, taekwondo athlete María del Rosario Espinoza was in charge of carrying the national flag and, from that moment on, she dreamed of one day receiving the opportunity.
“I remember that moment fondly. I got to see María be the flag bearer and then I got to see her win her second Olympic medal. I was a little girl who lived the Games with a lot of innocence. I dreamed regarding it from that moment on and, now that it is coming true, it makes me very excited and very proud that this little girl who visualized it is now fulfilling it,” said Alejandra.
She recalled that the news “took me by surprise,” and pointed out that just being considered to be the flag bearer “was an honor, for them to see my career and my results.”
When she was informed that she had been selected, “I accepted it with great honour and commitment.”
Alejandra Orozco has won two Olympic medals, one silver (London 20212) and one bronze (Tokyo 2020), so she has seen the Mexican flag waving at the most important sporting event, however, this will be something special for her.
Mexican makes history
Swimmer from Potosí, Jorge Iga César, earned his ticket to the 2024 Paris Olympic Games by clocking 48 seconds and 30 hundredths in his final event in the 100-meter freestyle at the Central American and Caribbean Swimming Championships, held in Monterrey.
With this score she obtained the Mexican record in the 100-meter freestyle event and qualified for the 200-meter freestyle in Paris.
The last time there was a Mexican representative in the 100-meter freestyle, the “queen event” of Olympic swimming, was 32 years ago, at the 1992 Barcelona Games.— EL UNIVERSAL
