Alecta President Carina Akerstrom has resigned just a week following taking office, the Swedish pension fund announced on Sunday, adding that it had reinstated its former interim president.

Alecta said it would reinstate Jan-Olof Jacke, who was named Alecta’s interim chairman in November 2023 when its previous chairman resigned.

“It is regrettable that Carina Akerstrom has changed her assessment of her ability to fulfill her role as chair of the Alecta board of directors and has chosen to resign,” said Kenneth Bengtsson, chairman of the nominating committee.

Alecta, which is Sweden’s largest pension fund, did not give a reason for Ms Akerstrom’s resignation, but said that in its view there had been no conflicts of interest that might not not be managed in the usual way.

Mr. Akerstrom did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

This is the second unsuccessful presidential nomination, following the nomination committee had to withdraw its nomination from former Danish central bank chief Lars Rohde due to a conflict issue. ‘interests.

The commission said it had learned that Mr. Rohde planned to take another position on the board of directors of another company and would nominate Mr. Akerstrom instead.

Before taking up her role as president of Alecta, Ms. Akerstrom was chief executive of Svenska Handelsbanken, which she left last year.

Last year, Alecta was the subject of two investigations by the Swedish Financial Supervisory Authority (FSA) regarding risk-taking.

The pension fund has been criticized for its large investment in the heavily indebted Heimstaden Bostad real estate group, as well as its investments in the failed banks First Republic, Silicon Valley and Signature in the United States. (Reporting by Marie Mannes; Writing by Josie Kao)
