Indonesian women’s tennis player Aldila Sutjiadi advanced to the last 16 in the mixed doubles event at the 2024 US Open, Saturday (31/8) WIB.
Paired with legendary Indian tennis player Rohan Bopanna, Aldila defeated the pair Demi Schuurs (Netherlands) and Tim Putz (Germany) with a final score of 7(9)-6(7), 7(7)-6(5) in a fierce match.
“I am very grateful to have reached the last 16 of the mixed doubles with Rohan. This is a great achievement for me,” said Aldila as reported by Between.
This victory ensured that Aldila qualified for the second round in two events at once, after Aldia previously advanced to the second round in the women’s doubles event with her partner, Ena Shibahara.
Rohan is a professional tennis player with a lot of experience, he won the 2024 Australian Open in men’s doubles at the age of 43 and was once the world’s number 1 doubles player. Currently, 44-year-old Rohan is ranked 4th in the world in doubles.
The match between Aldila/Bopanna and Schuurs/Putz was very tight from the beginning of the first set. Both pairs took turns leading the points. However, in the end, Aldila/Bopanna managed to win the tiebreak with a score of 9-7.
Entering the second set, the competition became fiercer. Both pairs continued to pressure each other. Aldila/Bopanna had to go through a tiebreak again to determine the winner.
With solid and calm play, they managed to win the tiebreak with a score of 7-5 and secured victory in the match.
“The match was very tight, we had to fight hard to win every point. However, the high fighting spirit and support from all parties made us able to achieve this victory,” said Aldila.
In the round of 16, Aldila/Bopanna will face the top pair, John Peers (Australia) and Katerina Siniakova (Czech Republic). Peers/Siniakova are a very experienced pair and have a good record in Grand Slam tournaments. (ant/M-3)
