The Aldi and Lidl chains have been the subject of complaints about deceptive practices and loss-making sales.

Independent entrepreneurs, community supermarkets and fishmongers’ organisations have filed a joint complaint with the Economic Inspectorate against Aldi and Lidl for “deceptive practices”. The organisations also suspect selling at a loss, which is prohibited by law, Het Laatste Nieuws said on Saturday.

The independent entrepreneurs’ union Unizo, the supermarket and specialty stores organization Buurtsuper.be and the fish traders’ union Vishandelaars.be have called for an investigation. For example, Aldi and Lidl sell mussels for only two to three euros per kilogram, which the union considers unacceptable.

They also hope the investigation will uncover whether the supermarket chain engaged in misleading behaviour by heavily promoting small offers so that many interested customers never even had the chance to buy them.

Aldi denied any loss-making sales. Lidl could not be reached for comment.
