Alcohol consumption in Belgium is a sensitive subject. And this is even more true among young people. A new study carried out by Vinum and Spiritus, the Belgian federation of the wine and spirits sector, 34% of young people aged 18 to 24 admit to having already drunk more alcohol than they initially wanted. “For 13% of young people, this even happens regularly. Peer pressure is one of the main causes of excessive alcohol consumption, also called binging, we learn.

Social pressure would therefore be the main cause of excesses among young people. This is in no way surprising, but the numbers prove that the problem cannot be denied. “We talk regarding binging drinking when someone drinks more than four to six units of alcohol in the space of two hours, with the intention of getting drunk quickly. Thus, more than half (51%) have already drunk excessively at least once in the past month. 11% even do it at least once a week,” details the study.
A phenomenon which mainly concerns young men. “Another interesting fact: men in particular seem to be both the disadvantaged and the instigators of this story. Nearly 41% of young Belgian men drink more alcohol because their friends encourage them, compared to 29% of women.”

We also learn that beer remains the favorite alcohol of Belgians: 69% of young people mainly drink beer. Geert Van Lerberghe, Managing Director at Vinum Et Spiritus, analyzes the situation. “In most cases, the heart of the problem is not so much the drinker himself, but rather the groups (of friends) who insist that a person consume more and more alcohol. Although this peer pressure often comes from good intention and a desire to have fun together, we need to be more vigilant regarding it.”
