Alcohol, even consumed in moderation, would increase the risk of suffering from around sixty diseases and medical conditions, reveals a study in the journal Nature Medicine.

Researchers at the University of Oxford came to this conclusion following a large study conducted in China with 512,000 participants over a period of 12 years.

61 medical problems might be associated with alcohol consumption. However, 33 of them had never been linked to alcohol intake.

While it was already known that alcohol consumption might increase the risk of esophageal cancer, liver disease or diabetes, it would also appear that stomach cancer, gastric ulcers, gout and Lung cancer can also be associated with drinking alcohol.

Although drinking every day or drinking excessively during an evening increases the likelihood of developing one or more of these medical conditions, even moderate drinking carries risks of suffering from these conditions, the study states.

“Alcohol consumption is linked to a much wider range of diseases than previously established,” said study author Pek Kei Im.

Of the 512,000 participants in this study, 41% were men and 33% of them said they drank alcohol at least once a week, while only 2% of women said they were regular drinkers.

Among male drinkers, 62% said they drank every day, while 37% admitted that they sometimes consumed a lot of alcohol during the same evening.
