How do diabetes and alcohol go together? There are many theories regarding this. Hypoglycemia, carbohydrates, calories – the current issue of the pharmacy magazine “Diabetes Guide” checks the facts and gives important tips on dealing with alcohol.
It is often said that alcohol can cause diabetes. And this fact is true. At least alcohol is a risk factor. Excessive amounts of it damage the pancreas and inflame it, which can promote the development of diabetes. And: The calories promote obesity – a main risk factor for the development of type 2 diabetes.
Is alcohol taboo if you have diabetes? The general rule is: less is always better! If the metabolism is well controlled and there are no other illnesses, people with diabetes can drink alcohol very moderately. Be careful with high blood pressure, nerve damage, lipid metabolism disorders or fatty liver: alcohol promotes these problems!
Can alcohol cause hypoglycemia? Yes, delayed. First of all, alcoholic drinks cause blood sugar levels to rise. However, with a time lag, this can decrease quickly. For people with type 1 diabetes, this means an increased risk of dangerous hypoglycemia. Because when the liver is busy breaking down alcohol, it cannot produce enough sugar and release it into the blood. When treating type 2 diabetes with insulin or sulfonylureas, hypoglycemia is possible even several hours following drinking alcohol.
And what is the truth regarding the theory that you break down alcohol quickly at a young age? Alcohol breakdown by the liver is only fully developed in adulthood. The degradation rate in the liver is significantly slowed down in young people. “That’s why young people with type 1 diabetes should be particularly careful with alcohol,” says diabetes consultant Helmut Nussbaumer from Burghausen in the pharmacy magazine “Diabetes Ratgeber”.
