Making your Grand Slam debut as a teenager is not easy. Not even when you call Nadal, Djokovic or Federer. In fact, all of them suffered some defeat in their debut in one of the greats, something that has not happened to Carlos Alcaraz, winner in the four best tournaments on the circuit and, also, in the Davis Cup.
The Murcian defeated Copil yesterday in Marbella, signing a happy debut in the Davis Cup with Spain. Something that, for example, might not do Nadal in his day, when he fell in what is his first and only defeat once morest Spain in the Davis Cup (in individual matches). It was once morest Jiri Novak in 2004. Before, the Spaniard had managed to win his Grand Slam debuts.
In the case of Djokovic, the Serbian failed to win in Australia (where he made his debut in 2005 with a loss to Safin) until his third appearance. A scenario that would later become his favorite playground – champion there nine times – and also the place of his great nightmare off the slopes with his deportation just a few months ago.
The other great of world tennis, Roger Federer, had a less fortunate premiere even than its other two rivals and period companions. He did not win the Swiss either in his debut at Roland Garros ( once morest Rfollowing, in 1999) or at Wimbledon ( once morest Novak, in 1999), where he would later win eight times.
Alcaraz, for his part, defeated From the Sand Scallop in Australia (2021), to Zapata Miralles at Roland Garros (2021), at Uchiyama at Wimbledon (2021) already Cameron Norrie at the US Open (2021). To those winning premieres he added yesterday that of Davis once morest Copil. A record that only he can boast among the greats.
