Alcaraz to Challenge Medvedev Again in Wimbledon Semifinals – 2024-07-14 08:47:43

Defending champion Carlos Alcaraz advanced to the Wimbledon semifinals following defeating American Tommy Paul on Tuesday (9/7).

Alcaraz recovered from a first-set set loss to seal a 5-7 6-4 6-2 6-2 victory in a match that lasted three hours and 11 minutes. Alcaraz will next meet Daniil Medvedev in the semifinals on Friday (12/7). The match was a repeat of last year’s semifinal, when Alcaraz defeated Medvedev of Russia in straight sets en route to his first Wimbledon title.

Alcaraz has won three Grand Slam titles at the age of 21, while Medvedev, the 2021 US Open champion, will be looking to reach his first Wimbledon final.

“Daniil is a very good player. It’s the same semi-final as last year, so hopefully I can get the same result,” Alcaraz was quoted as saying by BBC, Wednesday (10/7).

“He just won once morest Sinner, the best player at the moment, so he is in very good shape and I have to play as well as I can. I have to believe in myself and try to keep going. It will be difficult but I will enjoy it.”

Medvedev had to battle through to beat Jannik Sinner 6-7 (7-9) 6-4 7-6 (7-4) 2-6 6-3 in four hours on Centre Court. He ended his losing streak once morest Sinner.

Sinner had to get treatment during the match and was in poor physical condition. Until finally Medvedev won the match.

“I knew if I wanted to beat Jannik it was going to be a tough match. I’m very happy to win, very happy with my game and looking forward to (the semi-final once morest Alcaraz),” Medvedev said. (P-5)
