Alberto Fujimori, Ex-President of Peru, Dies at 86

Lima, Sep 11 (EFE).- Former Peruvian President Alberto Fujimori died on Wednesday at his residence in Lima At 86 years old, after “a long battle against cancer,” confirmed his daughter and political heir Keiko Fujimori.

“After a long battle with cancer, our father, Alberto Fujimori, has just passed away to meet the Lord. We ask those who loved him to accompany us with a prayer for the eternal rest of his soul. Thank you for so much, Dad,” Keiko Fujimori posted on the social network X, in a message she signed with her brothers Hiro, Sachie and Kenji.

Minutes earlier, Fujimori’s lawyer, Elio Riera, had gone ahead of the family and written his own farewell to the former president on the social network X.

“Mr. President, thank you for everything. Rest in peace. Your legacy will live on in history,” said Riera, who represented him in a new oral trial for the Pativilca massacre in 1992.

“Your friendship will be eternal for me. I will always remember your words: we achieved our goal. See you soon, my great friend,” the lawyer added.

Fujimori, who turned 86 on July 28, left the Lima prison last December where he was serving a 25-year sentence for crimes against humanity, after the Constitutional Court (TC) restored the humanitarian pardon granted to him in 2017 by then-ruler Pedro Pablo Kuczynski (2016-2018).

This decision was taken in defiance of orders from the Inter-American Court of Human Rights (IACHR).

In the last few hours, his supporters and closest collaborators have visited his home to inquire about his health, and even some former congresswomen, such as Luisa Cuculiza, told the press that Fujimori briefly responded to their greeting.

Likewise, the first vice president of the Peruvian Congress, the Fujimorist Patricia Juárez, asked Peruvians: “pray for him, for the health of President Fujimori.”

In a statement to reporters, Juárez said that her “prayers and thoughts are with President Alberto Fujimori,” accompanied by other members of the Fuerza Popular party, the party founded by Keiko Fujimori, the former president’s daughter.

Another Fuerza Popular legislator and personal doctor of the former president, Alejandro Aguinaga, declared hours earlier that Fujimori was “fighting” for his life at that time.

“The president is fighting (…) Given the current situation and as a result of the information (circulating about his health) we ask that visits be restricted and we reiterate our gratitude (for the interest in Fujimori),” he told reporters stationed at the door of the house.

Shortly after, the Peruvian Presidency expressed its concern for the former president’s health in a message on social media X.

“From the Presidency of the Republic we express our concern for the health of former President Alberto Fujimori and we wish him a speedy recovery. We extend our solidarity and strength to his family,” he said.
