Through his X account, Alberto Fernández, former president of Argentina, disqualified the recent comments of Javier Milei, current president of that country, once morest Gustavo Petro. It should be remembered that Milei, in an interview last week, defined the head of state as “a murderous communist who is sinking Colombia.”

The statements generated a wave of rejection from different actors in Colombian politics, even from some sectors distant from the Petro project. Likewise, the president himself called his ambassador in Argentina, Camilo Romero, for consultations, who joined the questions once morest Milei.

This Sunday, former President Fernández joined the claims and highlighted Petro’s work in the region. “I deeply regret the inadmissible insult to which the President of the Republic of Colombia, Gustavo Petro, has been subjected. His commitment to his people and his eternal struggle to strengthen Latin American unity make him a leader of enormous value who deserves our respect,” he assured.

The former president pointed out that Colombia and Argentina have always been twinned with other peoples in Latin America, so it is time to maintain this union of efforts in favor of regional stability. “Any disqualification of the other is inadmissible (…) I make public my recognition and solidarity with my dear friend, current president of the Republic of Colombia,” added Fernández.

The Colombian Foreign Ministry has already described Milei’s words as disrespectful and irresponsible, ensuring that “they violate the deep ties of friendship, understanding and cooperation that have historically united Colombia and Argentina.” Other members of the Historical Pact have also defended Petro.

“Petro has never been a communist nor has he murdered anyone. The comment might be misleading, but Milei is not just any right-wing clown. He is a head of state, whose words have international reach. The Foreign Ministry must ask for rectification and if it does not happen, review the bilateral relationship,” said former senator Gustavo Bolívar.

“Just as I rejected Petro comparing Milei with Pinochet and Videla, I also condemn Milei referring to Petro as a “murderous communist.” Both must understand that they are no longer activists, but heads of state, and that diplomatic relations cannot be managed with the liver,” said Uribista representative Andrés Forero.

For his part, Ambassador Romero assured, through his X account, that Milei is a hypocrite, because “while today he asks our government for approval for his new ambassador in Colombia, he calls the president a murderer.”
