Alberta Chief Electoral Officer Glen Ressler confirms that writs of election have been sent to returning officers in every riding in the province. We are pleased to welcome Albertans to the polls said Glen Ressler in a written statement.

As Alberta Lieutenant Governor Salma Lakhani is away from home, Danielle Smith asked Chief Justice Rita Khullar to dissolve the Legislative Assembly. The Prime Minister made the request by phone Monday, at 8:30 a.m. Monday.

[…] Danielle Smith had told him that she intended to ask him on May 1 to hold an election on May 29says the written statement of Colin Aitchison, acting director of communications for the office of Danielle Smith.

The parties have until May 11 to confirm the complete list of their candidates.

The United Conservative Party (UCP) of Alberta promises tax cuts

Danielle Smith began her election campaign on the tax front by promising to cut personal income tax.

If re-elected, the CERB will create a new 8% tax bracket on incomes under $60,000 promet Danielle Smith.

Currently, the minimum tax bracket is 10%. According to Danielle Smith, Albertans who earn less than $60,000 will see their provincial taxes reduced by 20% thanks to this new measure.

In addition, the suspension of the fuel tax will be extended until December 31 of this year, which would represent a savings of 13 cents for Alberta motorists, according to Danielle Smith. This suspension was to end next June.

The premier also reiterated her promise not to raise taxes and to put any future tax hikes to a referendum to win the approval of Albertans.

This election is a choice between moving forward or backward, between accepting progressive policies to promote economic growth and making the cost of living more affordable or returning to the costly policies of the [Nouveau Parti démocratique]says Danielle Smith.

The state of play

Before the dissolution of the Assembly, Danielle Smith’s United Conservative Party had the majority, with 60 MPs. The official opposition New Democratic Party, led by Rachel Notley, had 23 seats. Two deputies sat as independents, and two constituencies were vacant.

To obtain a majority, a party must win 44 constituencies. According to tradition, the person who leads the party that wins the most seats leads the province. Since the two main provincial parties are led by women, Alberta will certainly have a premier following the election.

Danielle Smith will try to obtain the consent of voters to keep her post as Prime Minister, which she has held since last October. She then won the race to succeed Jason Kenney, elected in 2019.

For her part, Rachel Notley wants to become the first person to obtain two non-consecutive terms at the head of Alberta. She served as Prime Minister from 2015 to 2019. Since 2019, she has been Leader of the Opposition.

To go vote

In addition to Election Day, May 29, advance polling days are also scheduled in the week leading up to that date. Eligible Albertans will therefore be able to vote from May 23 to 27.

To be able to vote, you must be a Canadian citizen, be at least 18 years old, and live in Alberta.
