– Albania has lost its spiritual liberator

The author died of a heart attack. Doctors tried to revive him, but he was pronounced dead at a hospital in the Albanian capital Tirana on Monday morning, his publicist Bujar Hudhri said.

– Albania and Albanians have lost their literary genius and their spiritual liberator. Europe and the world have lost one of modern literature’s most recognized representatives, says Albania’s President Bajram Begaj in a statement.

Kadare is considered Albania’s foremost writer and has written around 50 books.

He wrote his most famous novels during Hoxha’s communist regime. Kadare was oppositional and moved in 1990 to Paris, where he was granted political asylum.

Several of Kadare’s books have been translated into Norwegian, including “The wedding”, “Who followed Doruntine home”, “The palace of dreams” and “The general of the dead army”. The latter, which was published in his home country in 1964, was Kadare’s debut novel and was also made into a film in 1983.

Several of Kadare’s books depict life in Albania under Hoxha’s communist regime, which was based on fear and massive repression.

In 2005, Kadare received the International Booker Prize. The Albanian has been mentioned a number of times as a possible candidate for the Nobel Prize in Literature.

His books have been translated into more than 40 languages.
