The Bolivarian Alliance for the Peoples of Our America (ALBA) urged this Wednesday to counteract the “institutional and oligarchic coup d’état” directed against the president of ColombiaGustavo Petro. This occurred following the decision of the National Electoral Council (CNE) to file charges against his 2022 campaign for alleged financing irregularities.
“ALBA reiterates its complaint to the international community and calls for respect for the democratic and popular will of the Colombian people.”declared the secretary general of the regional bloc, the former Venezuelan foreign minister Jorge Arreazavia Telegram.
Institutional coup d’état directed at Petro
In addition, he recalled that on September 13, ALBA, which includes Venezuela, Cuba, Nicaragua, Bolivia, Antigua and Barbuda, Saint Kitts and Nevis, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, Grenada, Dominica and Saint Lucia, warned about a « possible coup d’état and attempted assassination” in Colombia.
This Tuesday, the CNE decided to initiate an investigation and file charges for alleged irregularities in Petro’s presidential campaign. In response, Petro launched harsh criticism against the electoral body, stating that it is “infiltrated by the same politicians who have governed the country for decades.”
The institution maintains that Petro, in his capacity as a candidate, as well as his campaign manager, Ricardo Roa, and other members of his team, must be held accountable “for the alleged violation of the electoral campaign financing regime.”
They are suspected of exceeding established spending limits and using prohibited sources that were not declared.
