Alastair Cook, one of the greatest Test players England cricket has ever seen and one of England’s greatest ever captains, has retired from professional cricket. Cook, who retired from international cricket earlier, has now taken a complete break from his cricket career.
Although he retired from international cricket in 2018, Cook was an active presence in the county championship. Cook retired from cricket following playing for Essex in the county.
‘Today I am announcing my retirement. This marks the end of my career as a professional cricketer,’ Cook said in a statement.
‘Saying goodbye is never easy. For more than two decades, cricket meant more to me than just my job. Cricket has allowed me to go and experience places I never dreamed of going.
Cricket allowed me to be part of a team that achieved things I never thought possible. Most importantly, I have made deep friendships through cricket that will last a lifetime.
I now have a mixture of pride and sadness as I have come from being an eight-year-old playing for Wickham Bishops. Most of all, I am incredibly happy.
It is the right time to end this part of my life. I have always given my full potential and time to be the best player I can be. But now I want to pave the way for the new generation to take it up.
I joined the county when I was 12 years old. I am totally indebted to my team Essex. The support from the fans, team members and staff has been overwhelming.
Little did I know when I ended my international career that I would be playing for Essex for another five years. Words cannot express how much we enjoyed that time.
I want to thank the head coach Anthony McGrath, Ryan ten Doschet, Tom Westley and my two captains at the time and all the stars. I don’t miss any opportunity to strap on the pad and face Newball. But I will definitely miss the Eagles dressing room.
Playing the entirety of the 2019 Essex County Championship winning season is one of my favorite achievements in the game. I want to see Essex play better. Hope to win many more trophies in the coming years,’ added Cook.
Cook played 161 Test matches for England in international cricket. Cook scored 12,472 runs from this.
