With more than 228 thousand infections in the last 24 hours, Italy registered the record number of cases since the start of the pandemic.

Italy reported this Tuesday 228,179 new infections of covid-19, the highest figure recorded in the country on the same day since the pandemic began.

The alarming number of 434 deaths, the highest number since April 14, 2021, when it was 469.

According to Italian health authorities, the region of Lombardy, in the north of the country, is one of the regions that leads the number of new infections with 37,823 cases. It is followed by Veneto, to the east, and Campania, to the south, with 25,166 and 21,670 infections, respectively.

On this last day, 1,481,349 covid-19 tests were carried out, which is 940,051 more than on Monday when 541,298 tests were processed. The positivity rate is holding steady at 15.4 percent.

So far, the total amount of registered infections amounts to 9,018,425 and were counted 141,825 deaths.

Meanwhile, the health authorities discharged 220,811 people, leaving 2,562,156 active cases, including 19,448 hospitalized and 1,715 patients in intensive care units.

Regarding the immunization campaign, 75 percent of Italians already have the full regimen, while regarding 45 percent have already received a booster dose.
