Alarming Increase of Cancer Cases Among Those Under 50: Causes and Future Projections

2023-09-10 01:36:00

The reasons for this increase in cancers detected in those under 50 remain complex to determine. Researchers emphasize the role of classic risk factors such as alcohol, tobacco and a sedentary lifestyle.

18 million new cases of cancer every year

In three decades, cases of cancer diagnosed in those under 50 have increased alarmingly, recording an increase of 79%. Between 1990 and 2019, the annual number of new cases among 14-49 year olds increased from 1.82 million to 3.26 million, according to a study published in the journal BMJ Oncology. This progression, which is thought-provoking, remains complex for researchers to explain despite population growth. Every year, the world has 18 million new cases of cancer and 14-49 year olds are not spared. To achieve this result, researchers from the University of Edinburgh and China’s Zhejiang University analyzed data from 204 countries and 29 types of cancer, reports West France.

An increase of 31% by 2030

In 2019, 1.06 million people under the age of 50 lost their lives due to cancer, which represents an increase of 27% compared to 1990. Breast cancers are the deadliest in this age group, followed by cancers of the trachea, lung, stomach and intestine. Mortality rates have also increased for kidney and ovarian cancers. However, scientists are still struggling to explain the reasons for this increase. Global population growth plays a role, but the increase in screening, especially in rich countries, also plays an important role.

While people under 50 rarely carry out systematic screening around the world, researchers emphasize classic risk factors such as alcohol, tobacco and a sedentary lifestyle. They also estimate that the number of new cases among those under 50 should increase by 31% by 2030, mainly among those aged 40-49.
