Alan Wake 2 has been available for a few days now and seems to be delighting players. Remedy’s game has many qualities, and particularly shines through its artistic direction and graphics. As always, Digital Foundry looked into the subject, and today the experts provide their technical analysis of the Xbox Series X|S and PS5 versions.

Two graphics modes on Xbox Series X and PS5

As we know, Alan Wake 2 offers two graphics modes on Xbox Series X and PS5. In its quality mode, the game runs in 1270p, upscaled to 4K thanks to FSR 2. The performance mode runs in a resolution of 847p, upscaled to 1440p via FSR 2.

There are also graphical differences between the two modes, the density of the vegetation and the details on the ground being the most fragrant, while the filtering of textures is also of lower quality in performance mode.

Digital Foundry also notes differences in the quality of volumetric light, fog and shadow filtering.

In comparison, the Xbox Series

Better performance on Xbox Series

Regarding the framerate, Digital Foundry points out, however, that the Xbox Series X offers better performance than the Sony console.

Performance mode offers 60 FPS generally without fluctuations, while quality mode is even more stable with a solid 30 FPS most of the time.

The PS5 struggles to maintain 60 FPS in its performance mode, and the quality mode is not spared from fluctuations either.

Only one mode on Xbox Series S

As is often the case, Xbox Series S players will not have the choice of graphics mode. Alan Wake 2 is in fact not playable at 60 FPS on Microsoft’s small console, which is always regrettable for those who prefer to prioritize framerate.

Fortunately, the graphics quality on Xbox Series S is similar to that of Xbox Series

The main difference with the Xbox Series good, with a framerate of 30 FPS which, with the exception of a few fluctuations, is considered relatively stable.

Below is the full analysis from Digital Foundry. If the PC version of the game excels, in particular thanks to the use of path tracing, experts conclude that consoles are not left out.

Surprisingly, the Xbox Series X offers better performance here than the PS5, currently making Microsoft’s machine the platform of choice for enjoying the game.
