Alan Wake 2 is being boycotted! Although this did not prevent the game from being nominated 8 times for the Game Awards, players are unhappy that the software is only available digitally.

Alan Wake 2, with its 8 Game Awards nominations (including that for GOTY 2023), has attracted a lot of attention, and not only for its narrative quality. Indeed, the title was released with a particularity which even earned it to be reported as a “Red Flag”. Some even go so far as to boycott it! In this JV Fast, we return to what earned it this name: the software was only released in a dematerialized version on the Epic Game Store. The publisher obviously has its reasons, but this deprives the game and players of certain benefits while having influence on the market.

No physical release for Alan Wake 2!

Indeed, Alan Wake 2 was only released in digital version and this is understandable just by knowing its publisher: Epic Game. The latter obviously has every interest in the game only existing digitally, so that players are encouraged to come to its own online store: the Epic Game Store. However, by doing this, the creator of Fortnite is depriving himself of part of the market. According to a recent SELL study, out of 4,000 players surveyed, 72% prefer a boxed game if they have the choice. It is therefore also a risk for the publisher to release Alan Wake 2 in this way. And that’s not all.

The biggest concern for the video game market is that Alan Wake 2 cannot be sold in stores. As a result, stores are deprived of a big release and are harmed: it is impossible to sell it new or used. The same goes for players, they are unable to buy it cheaper or even resell it to buy another title later. We explore this path a little more in the JV Debate above, as well as others such as the sustainability of the medium in general.

Alan Wake 2 made compromises for its release

This physical compromise allowed the game to be financed by taking one less risk. Managing inventory and anticipating the market is a difficult task that costs money, and it’s even harder to hit the mark for non-mainstream adventures like Alan Wake 2. This feature, coupled with the release software only in dematerialized form, making it a case to follow for the market. If the stock benefits, both of these aspects may be repeated on other major titles. This is why some players want to express their dissatisfaction by boycotting it and prevent it from giving ideas to the industry.
