THE MORNING LIST
The video game is an Eldorado for lovers of monsters or the supernatural: Silent Hill, Alone in the Dark, Five Nights at Freddy’s, Resident Evil… So many cult titles and series inspired by horror which have joined the pantheon of pop culture and which continue to generate an abundant descendant. To find your way among the many recent releases of horror titles, here is a selection of ten video games that have left their mark on us recently.
Paranormal and supernatural
“World of Horror”: bleeding investigation in retro
PANSTASZ / SPIRIT OF GAMES
Japanese teenagers confronted with bloody crimes and atrociously deformed creatures… Fans of Junji Ito will not fail to detect the strong homage to the master of horror manga. But World of Horror is a multi-faceted black diamond: a bloody role-playing game, it is also a unique investigation and an inspired reinterpretation of titles from the 1980s. A little rough to learn due to the retro interface (it is a bias), but devilishly fascinating.
Available on PC, Switch and PlayStation (4 and 5) for 20 euros.
“Alan Wake 2”: in the twists and turns of a foggy scenario
REMEDY ENTERTAINMENT
It’s been thirteen years since we last heard from writer Alan Wake, trapped in an evil parallel dimension at the end of the first game of the same name. Remedy Entertainment decided to take him out of there to reconnect with his foggy universe, on the northwest coast of the United States. Still full of his primary influences – Stephen King and Twin Peaks –, this sequel is set to become a new reference for horror fans. As long as you are not frightened by a scenario so complicated that you have to have a board saturated with pins and woolen threads to find your way around.
Available on PC, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series for 60 euros.

“Paranormasight: the Seven Mysteries of Honjo”: real thrills for an interactive novel
SQUARE ENIX
If you were planning to spend Halloween reading terrifying short stories by Edgar Allan Poe under a blanket, take the time to consider the alternative Paranormasight : ce visual novel (interactive novel) very inventive will not fail to give you cold sweats. Set in the 1980s, it places the player in the shoes of teenagers in search of a resurrection stone. To get it, they must kill each other using supernatural powers. This manga-style game hides perfectly oiled fun mechanics, rich in dilemmas, twists and turns and crafted dialogues.
Available on PC and Switch for 20 euros, on iOS and Android for 16 euros.
The legacy of “Resident Evil”
“Signalis”: in the shoes of a robot
ROSE-ENGINE / HUMBLE GAMES
Back to basics. Dark corridors, monsters in ambush, limited ammunition, an inventory to manage, a fixed camera and doors to unlock. signaled carries within it the DNA of Resident Evil, first of the name. In this nostalgic formula, our character is an artificial being, the robot LSTR (“Elster”), who takes us on a mysterious journey whose goal is slowly revealed as we explore.
Available on PC, Switch, PlayStation (4 and 5) for 20 euros and free with the GamePass subscription on Xbox (One and Series).
“Resident Evil 4 Remake”: zombies and men
CAPCOM
Make way for the lord, the one who needs no introduction as he revolutionized the genre when it was released in 2005 on GameCube. Faithful to its work of restoring the rich (and sticky) heritage of the series Resident Evil, publisher Capcom has rebuilt this episode from scratch, one of the benchmarks of horror gaming for almost two decades. This modern version does not disappoint and received unanimous acclaim when it was released in the spring.
Available on PC, PlayStation (4 and 5) and Xbox (One and Series) for 60 euros.
“Dead Space Remake”: apocalyptic camera
MOTIVE / ELECTRONIC ARTS
The heavy step of the hero is one of the unforgettable elements of Dead Space, released in 2008. In his imposing suit, whose lights indicate the health gauge, each stride brings him as close to hell as to a hypothetical exit door because he is trapped in a ship whose crew is suffering from terrible mutations. Just like its inspiration, Resident Evil 4 (see above), the game from Visceral Games also benefited this year from a high-end remake at the start of the year.
Available on PC, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series for 60 euros.
The unclassifiable strangenesses
“How Fish is Made”: revealing the sardine in you
WRONG ORGAN
You are a sardine. You move by jumping on the metal floor of a labyrinthine setting that resembles a sewer. Where are you going ? Mystery. What do these cryptic phrases spoken by the other creatures you encounter mean? Difficult to know. The meaning of this game, viscous and surreal, constantly escapes you and that’s normal: How Fish is Made is, in reality, a thirty-minute video game reverie that it is up to everyone to decipher.
Available on PC for free.
“Scorn”: parasitic peregrination in organic soils
EBB SOFTWARE / KEPLER INTERACTIVE
To present Scorn in a very conventional way, it suffices to describe it as a puzzle game in the first person view, in the Myst. More Scorn is not a trivial game. It is a journey to the end of suffering, where the horror, which passes through the alteration of the body, becomes existentialist. While a parasite gradually takes possession of the main character, we pass through organic settings inspired by artists HR Giger and Zdzislaw Beksinski. Even if we come away tested by disturbing puzzles and imprecise action sequences, the work shines with its radical choices and its venomous beauty.
Available on PC, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series for 40 euros.

“Sons of the Forest”: Friday and the Nightmare Life
ENDNIGHT GAMES LTD / NEWNIGHT
The character of Kelvin is a superb find in this sequel to the survival game The Forest (2018). After the crash of our helicopter in a hostile region, this companion in misfortune with a brain damaged by the accident will be our faithful ally: despite his empty gaze and his bleeding ears, he responds to each of our orders, presented in a notebook white. Kelvin goes looking for wood, stones or food while we build our camp and explore the threatening surroundings… He is our ray of sunshine in this nightmarish version of the Robinsonade that is Sons of the Forest.
Available on PC for 29 euros.
« Iron Lung » : oppression sous-marine
DAVID SZYMANSKI
This game was highlighted, despite itself, by the tragic submarine accident Titan in the month of June. Trapped in a submersible, at the bottom of an ocean of blood on an alien planet, the pilot, whom we play, is deprived of his observation devices and left to his own devices. Our only option for survival: to move blindly by transferring the coordinates of a schematic map to the device’s controls, in order to reach different points of interest where bizarre shows await us. In this minimalist game, there are no refined graphics to scare us or moments of surprise to make us jump. It is enough for him to confront us with our powerlessness to arouse a feeling of oppression.
Available on PC for 4 euros.
