The former socialist mayor of Seraing, Alain Mathot, is ordered to pay 700,000 euros to the Liège waste management intermunicipal company, Intradel, according to RTBF. This amount is the estimate made by the courts of price of corruption as part of the award of the public contract for the construction of a waste incinerator in Herstal. The court decided on Friday that the money must finally be paid to Intradel, which had requested it during the hearing on September 15.
However, the legal case is not closed because according to Intradel’s lawyer, the sum to be recovered should exceed the million euros taking into account interest. However, Alain Mathot recently declared himself insolvent. The intermunicipal association therefore asks the courts to recover the money via the ex-politician’s assets which have already been seized or other possible assets which will be seized in the future. Usually, these assets become state property. Intradel’s request will be debated in court on January 19, 2024.
