Al-Sudani and Saeed discuss enhancing cooperation between Baghdad and Tunisia

Al-Sudani arrived in the capital, Tunis, yesterday, Wednesday, on an official visit during which he met with the heads of government and the republic. This is the first visit by an Iraqi prime minister to Tunisia in about 3 decades, after relations between the two countries were limited to mutual visits between foreign ministers and executive officials.

Al-Sudani’s office said in a press statement, “The Iraqi Prime Minister extended an official invitation to the Tunisian President to visit Iraq, to strengthen Iraqi-Tunisian relations, which are witnessing a new phase.”

The statement explained that “relations were strengthened by the signing of nearly twenty memoranda of understanding.” It added that the meeting of the joint committee between the two countries last May confirmed the mutual desire to strengthen relations in various fields, especially in the field of tourism.

Al-Sudani stressed that “what has been happening in Gaza for more than ten months requires a firm and frank stance towards the Zionist entity’s ongoing attacks against defenceless civilians,” stressing that “Iraq stands with the right of the Palestinian people to establish their independent state with Jerusalem as its capital.”

President Kais Saied said that “the cancellation of the travel visa between the two countries is an important factor in strengthening relations.”

Extensive discussions took place between Al-Sudani and Saeed, which included joint files in various fields, and included emphasis on the importance of continuing work and diligent efforts to advance these relations, in a way that achieves the common interests of the two countries, according to the Iraqi statement.

Al-Sudani arrived in Tunisia from Egypt, where he met with Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi on Tuesday. Al-Sudani’s office said in a press statement that the Egyptian president “expressed his keenness to fully cooperate with Iraq in various fields,” and stressed that “a strong Iraq is a pillar of the region and Arab countries.”

The Iraqi statement said that the two sides “have identical visions regarding the existence of a clear political will in both countries towards integration.”

The meeting between Al-Sudani and Al-Sisi addressed “regional and international issues of common interest, most notably the continued Zionist aggression against our Palestinian people in Gaza.”
