Amman – Jordanian Foreign Minister Ayman Safadi discussed, on Wednesday, the High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy of the European Union, Josep Borrell, and the Secretary-General of the United Nations, Antonio Guterres, a ceasefire in the Gaza Strip and reducing the escalation in the region.
This came during a call with Borrell and his meeting with Guterres in New York, according to two statements by the Jordanian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
The first statement stated that Safadi and Borrell stressed “the priority of reaching an immediate ceasefire in Gaza and ending the humanitarian catastrophe facing the Strip.”
They stressed “the necessity of uniting all efforts to stop the dangerous escalation taking place in the region.”
Al-Safadi and Borrell warned of “the dangerous repercussions of continued paralysis in reaching a ceasefire,” according to the statement.
They called for “continuing joint action to stop the war, bring in aid, and launch a real movement to implement the two-state solution (Palestinian and Israeli).”
Al-Safadi stressed that the Kingdom “will not allow anyone to turn Jordan into a war zone, and will confront any violation of its airspace and a threat to its security and the safety of its citizens, whether the source of the threat is Israel or Iran.”
He urged the need to prevent “the Israeli Prime Minister (Benjamin Netanyahu) from using the escalation with Iran to divert attention away from the disaster represented by the war on Gaza, and drag the West into a regional war with Iran to serve his agenda.”
In turn, Borrell stressed support for Jordan’s position, which “constitutes a pillar of the security and stability of the region,” according to the same statement.
He pointed out that “the European Union supports Jordan’s efforts to stop the war on Gaza, provide adequate and sustainable humanitarian aid to all parts of the Strip, and reduce escalation in the region.”
In his meeting with Guterres, Al-Safadi held extensive discussions that focused on “the necessity of stopping the aggression once morest Gaza and ending the humanitarian catastrophe it is causing,” according to another statement by the Jordanian Foreign Ministry.
They also discussed “the existing cooperation between Jordan and the United Nations to stop the aggression and bring sufficient and sustainable aid to all parts of the sector.”
The two parties stressed “the necessity of reducing the escalation in the region.”
On Saturday evening, Iran launched regarding 350 missiles and drones in its first attack on Israel from its territory, in response to a missile attack that targeted the consular section of the Tehran embassy in Damascus in early April, while Tel Aviv stated its intention to respond.
For more than 6 months, Israel has been waging a devastating war on the Gaza Strip, leaving tens of thousands of civilian casualties, a humanitarian catastrophe and massive destruction, which led to Israel being brought before the International Court of Justice on charges of committing “genocide.”
