New York – Yesterday, Thursday, Jordanian Foreign Minister Ayman Safadi called on the Security Council to recognize the independent state of Palestine and accept its full membership in the United Nations “in support of truth and a victory for peace.”
This came in a speech during an open session of the Security Council before voting on Palestine’s request for full membership in the United Nations, followed by Anadolu’s correspondent.
Al-Safadi said: “Israel destroyed Gaza, displaced two-thirds of its people, and reduced its schools to rubble… It is a tour of falsehood whose arrogance the world has never seen before.”
He added: “Israel destroyed Gaza and did not break its people’s will to live,” stressing that “occupation and peace are opposites that do not go together.”
Addressing those gathered, Al-Safadi continued: “Recognize the independent Palestinian state. Accept the State of Palestine as a full member of the United Nations. Do this in support of truth and a victory for peace.”
He went on to say: “Do not leave the future of the region hostage to the obscurantism of extremist racists in the Israeli government, who are pushing the region towards the devastation of wars.”
Palestine obtained the status of a “non-member observer state” in the United Nations following a resolution adopted by the General Assembly by a large majority on November 29, 2012.
Palestine applied for full membership in the United Nations in 2011, but its application did not receive the necessary support at the time in the UN Security Council.
Obtaining full membership requires the approval of 9 member states of the Security Council (15 countries), provided that none of the five veto countries, namely the United States, Russia, France, Britain, and China, object.
If the Council approves, the membership application is referred to the General Assembly, and it is required to obtain two-thirds of the votes of the Assembly, which consists of 193 countries, 139 of which recognize the State of Palestine.
Al-Safadi considered in his speech that “signs of escalation appeared when Iran responded to the bombing of its consulate in Damascus. Iran said that it would not escalate further, and the Israeli government must be prevented from escalating. Stopping the escalation is a regional and international necessity, and the aggression once morest Gaza must be ended. This is the main issue.”
Minister Safadi also stressed that the Kingdom will not allow Iran and Israel to make Jordan an “area of conflict.”
He added: “We will protect our security and the security of our citizens, and we will confront with all our capabilities and capabilities any attempt to violate our airspace and endanger the security of our citizens, whether by Israel, Iran, or anyone.”
On Saturday evening, Iran launched regarding 350 missiles and drones in its first attack on Israel from its territory, in response to a missile attack targeting the consular section of the Tehran embassy in Damascus in early April, while Tel Aviv stated its intention to respond.
For more than 6 months, Israel has been waging a devastating war on the Gaza Strip, leaving tens of thousands of civilian casualties, a humanitarian catastrophe and massive destruction, which led to Israel being brought before the International Court of Justice on charges of committing “genocide.”
