LUCKNOW, India (AP) — A collision between a double-decker passenger bus and a milk truck in northern India killed at least 18 people and injured many others, authorities said.
The accident took place on a highway in Uttar Pradesh and 19 people were taken to hospital by local residents and were in stable condition, police officer Arvind Kumar said. The bus was traveling from the northern state of Bihar to the capital New Delhi.
“Authorities are in the process of identifying the victims and have launched an investigation to determine the exact cause of the accident,” Kumar added.
Government official Gaurang Rathi said that based on preliminary investigation, the bus may have collided with the rear of the milk truck while speeding, causing both vehicles to overturn. The collision was so severe that one side of the bus came off, causing passengers to be ejected from the vehicle. Television images showed bodies scattered along the road.
India has one of the highest road fatalities in the world, with hundreds of thousands killed and injured every year. Most accidents are caused by reckless driving, poor road maintenance and aging vehicles.
In May this year, a bus carrying Hindu pilgrims skidded on a mountain road in Indian-administered Kashmir and plunged into a deep ravine, killing at least 21 people.
