Athletic Bilbao officially announced the return of coach Ernesto Valverde to coach the team once more. Athletic Bilbao said in a statement: “Ernesto Valverde is the new coach of the team, the record holder for the most matches in history as sporting director in history for a third term in San Mamés.”
Valverde coached Athletic Bilbao for the first time in 2003 to 2005, and then in 2013 to 2017, before returning once more on Thursday.
In his first term, Valverde led Athletic Bilbao 87 games, then 213 games in the third period. At the level of titles, he led the Basque team to win the Spanish Super Cup 2016.
But Valverde’s most famous period was with Barcelona, where he won two La Liga titles, a Spanish Cup and a Spanish Super Cup, during 145 matches between 2017 and 2020.
