Uruguayan striker Luis Suarez has signed a short-term contract with his footballing debut, Nacional, ahead of the Qatar World Cup, scheduled for the end of this year, the club’s president announced on Wednesday.

The 35-year-old left Atletico Madrid at the end of last season and searched in vain for a new team to defend his colors, which made him return to Nacional with a short contract in preparation for his fourth World Cup participation.

“Suarez signed a five-month contract, it’s done,” Nacional president Jose Fuentes told local radio 890, adding that Suarez should arrive in Uruguay this weekend and might start his campaign on Tuesday in the Sudamericana Cup (equivalent to the Europa League in Europe). Against Atlético Guayanense, Brazil.

Suarez began his career in Nacional, which gave him on May 18, 2005 his debut with the first team at the age of eighteen.
After a full season with the first team, he moved to Dutch Groningen and only a year later to local giants Ajax Amsterdam.

The Uruguayan drew the attention of Liverpool, which he joined in 2011, and following three and a half seasons at Anfield, he moved to Barcelona in a deal that exceeded 80 million euros.

In Catalonia, Suarez achieved success, winning four titles in the Spanish League and the Champions League in 2015, before being abandoned by Barcelona in 2020, which made the Uruguayan striker join the local opponent, Atletico Madrid, who also crowned him with the League title in 2021.

Now, Suarez will return to Nacional in order to play with him in the second leg “Clausura” as part of his personal preparations for the World Cup finals scheduled in Qatar between November 21 and December 18.
