Al Hoceima earthquake victims in a new protest in front of parliament, coinciding with continued exclusion and marginalization

The forms of protest that families affected by the Al Hoceima earthquake are waging continue, as the latter are preparing to organize a new protest stand in front of the parliament building next Wednesday, to demand the lifting of “exclusion and marginalization,” and to emphasize their adherence to obtaining their rights.

Families affected by the earthquake in six regions, including Al Haouz and Taroudant, are still living in tents at the mercy of the weather, and not benefiting from the support and programs allocated for reconstruction.

In addition to the high temperatures, affected families face several risks, the latest of which is the risk of being exposed to scorpion stings and snake bites, coinciding with the arrival of summer.

Those affected by the earthquake confirm that 10 months following the disaster, they are still living in unstable conditions without a source of income, compensation, or future plans to build their homes.

In light of this situation, those affected by the earthquake in the villages and districts concerned are demanding that their files and grievances regarding obtaining support be processed quickly, and that the reconstruction process be accelerated, in a way that will enable their homes to be rebuilt as soon as possible and enable them to live there.

It is worth noting that a recent report by the National Human Rights Council detailed a number of problems related to earthquake victims, including the lack of privacy requirements in some temporary shelters, which poses a number of difficulties, especially for women and people with disabilities. It pointed out that these places should be safe and away from natural hazards, while ensuring their proximity to basic health services and taking into account the special needs of children and the elderly.

In a related context, the Council stressed the difficulties of the flow of humanitarian aid to the affected areas, especially for the villages that are difficult to reach due to the fragile infrastructure and rugged roads, in addition to the shortage of medical personnel and resources.
