Saudi club Al Hilal set a world record by winning 28 consecutive matches. The unique feat was achieved by defeating Al Ittihad by two goals in the Asian Champions League on Tuesday. The record of 27 wins achieved by Wales club New Saints in 2016 has given way to Al Hilal.
Al-Hilal, which is coming out with the strength of a large number of stars including Brazilian superstar Neymar, Portuguese star Ruben Neves, Serbian striker Aleksandar Mitrovic, Senegalese defender Kalidou Koulibaly, and Moroccan goalkeeper Yassin Bonu, has not lost since they drew 1-1 with Damac last September. Although Neymar, who was brought to the team from PSG for 90 million euros, has not played since October due to a leg injury, Al Hilal continues to win.
Al Hilal’s coach is Jorge Jesus, who was the coach of Benfica and Flamingo. Mitrovic scored 26 of the team’s 81 goals in the last 28 matches. The jump to the record is 16 in the Saudi League, nine in the Asian Champions League and three domestic matches. Al Hilal are 12 points ahead of Cristiano Ronaldo’s Al Nasrin who are second in the Saudi Pro League.
The team has also made it to the semi-finals following defeating Al Ittihad 2-0 in the Asian Champions League second leg match held at the King Abdullah Sports City Stadium. They had won the first leg match by the same score. The opponents in the semi-finals are UAE Club Al Ain. Al Hilal are the current runners-up of the tournament.
