THIRUVANANTHAPURAM ∙ The investigating officers said that the family of former president N. Bhasurangan, who committed an irregularity of 101 crores in Kandala Service Cooperative Bank, led a luxurious life. There was opposition within the CPI over son Akhiljit’s lavish lifestyle. Akhil traveled in a luxury car. No action was taken on the complaints as they were related to top leaders in CPI, CPM and Congress. The luxury car was seized by the Enforcement Directorate (ED). A detailed investigation is going on regarding Akhil’s money transactions. Akhil used to run a super market in Nadu but it closed down later. He also ran a restaurant in Poojapura. The ED is also probing the land transactions of the family.

Bhasurangan, who left the Congress and joined the CPI in 2006, had connections with all parties. By helping all the party members financially, grievances were contained. Appointments in banks and other institutions were also given to those recommended by the party leaders. There is talk within the CPI that large sums of money were donated to the leaders of various parties for campaigning during the elections. It was alleged that Bhasurangan had tried to defeat the CPM candidate in Kattakkada in the last election.

There was a situation where the candidate had to be warned directly. According to the local leadership, Bhasurangan stopped working for the opposition following informing the top CPM leaders. ED has received information regarding the benami deposits of the leaders in the bank. Bhasurangan also had a habit of giving vehicles to leaders. Bhasurangan maintained close ties with key leaders of the district and some of the state leaders of the CPI. CPI leaders say that some of them were receiving financial assistance on a regular basis.

There was also an incident where Bhasurangan narrowly escaped an assassination attempt. In July, there was an acid attack on CPI Maranallur local secretary AR Sudhirkhan. CPI Kattakkada Constituency Secretariat member Sajikumar Sudhir Khan was attacked while he was sleeping. 80% vision loss in one eye. Sajikumar came first targeting Bhasurangan. As the house was crowded, Bhasurangan’s close friend Sudheer Khan went to his house and attacked. Later Sajikumar committed suicide.

Problems in the party and a dispute between the two with Sajikumar, a former secretary of the Ksheera Sangh of which Sudhir Khan is the president, led to the attack. The investigation found that frauds had started in Bhasurangan Bank 30 years ago. Following the irregularities committed in 1993, the Cooperative Department issued a directive to levy a fine, but the LDF government canceled it. Even then, Bhasurangan was helped by high connections.
