In an effort to keep back-to-school costs as low as possible for parents, AK Consumer Advocates is raising the price of school supplies. The results show the possible savings potential: for the example shopping cart, the price for the cheap product for first-year students is 73 euros and for the branded product 129 euros, while for the example shopping cart for secondary schools, the prices range from 113 to 189 euros. By using promotional prices in a targeted manner and avoiding branded products, you can save a lot of money.
The AK consumer protection investigation is based on school item lists for the first grade of elementary school and the first grade of junior high school. Prices of individual school supplies from nine providers were compared. The results show the cheapest suppliers of essential school equipment. For branded products listed in the school supply list, such as “Jolly” or “Dürer Hase”, inexpensive alternatives are also included.
Targeted use of promotional prices
Consumer Protection recommends asking about the price advantages offered by the provider before purchasing. Surveys show that some retailers offer special prices on different product groups – even if only for a short period of time.
You can save significantly, especially on more expensive products: you can save up to 7 euros on 24 Jolly colored pencils, up to 6 euros on fountain pens and almost 5 euros on ink pens. But even with cheaper products, where you need to buy a few pieces, savings are possible.

- In Thalia, the list can be processed by on-site staff. You can also use the coupon to get 20% off all school supplies from August 22 to September 15, 2024. The voucher will be sent together with the “School Flyer” or collected at the branch.
When buying a school, you should also consider the environment
It pays to buy high-quality products with spare parts: they last longer and are therefore environmentally friendly.
