The Dutch club announced it on Monday. The proceedings initiated by the family with the Arbitration Board of the Dutch Federation (KNVB) have therefore come to an end. In July 2017, Nouri suffered a cardiac arrest during a friendly match in Austria. The midfielder suffered severe and permanent brain damage. Ajax later admitted that the medical care provided on the pitch at first was not adequate. The club has therefore acknowledged its responsibility as an employer for the consequences.
The agreement includes loss of work capacity and compensation for pain and suffering. Ajax will also continue to pay the costs of Nouri’s treatment. The club has already been doing this since the summer of 2017.
“It’s good that an agreement has been reached, it allows us to put an end to this affair,” commented Edwin van der Sar, general manager of Ajax, in a statement. “We all realize that this does not mean that the suffering of Abdelhak and his loved ones is over. It remains an extremely sad situation, we feel the same here at Ajax.”
“This summer, it will be five years since Abdelhak was struck by fate,” reacted Mohammed Nouri, the player’s father. “The past few years have been dedicated to his care. In addition to all the difficult times, it has also given us many precious memories. Above all, the realization that for many people, Abdelhak is the embodiment of solidarity and brotherhood. It’s an extremely comforting thought.”
