AJ Power, a leading energy solutions provider, is taking a proactive step towards ensuring a stable energy future for Latvia. The company has committed €6 million to install cutting-edge energy-saving battery systems (BESS) at its three high-capacity solar power parks in Valmiera,Aizkraukle, and Ilukste.
These strategic investments are slated to become operational in the coming months, paving the way for a more resilient power grid as Latvia prepares for significant changes. In February 2025, the Baltic region will disconnect from the BRALL network, necessitating increased balancing capacities to maintain grid stability.
The BESS systems, boasting a combined capacity of 9 megawatts (MW) and 18 megawatt-hours (MWh), are designed to address this challenge head-on. “2025 will be especially challenging for the Latvian energy industry,” acknowledges Roberts Samtiņš, Head of the AJ Power enterprise Group. “The planned shutdown of the Baltics from the BRALL network in February will create a need for additional balancing capacities. Because of this very reason, we started designing and placing BESS systems last year to adjust to these changes quickly and engage in the new balancing market.”
This proactive approach demonstrates AJ Power’s commitment to investing in enduring energy solutions. “We are constantly investing in the creation of new energy and renewable solutions in Latvia, and this year our goal is to expand our operations in export markets as well,” adds Samtiņš.
enhancing the efficiency of these BESS systems is a state-of-the-art battery management system, developed in collaboration with the artificial intelligence (AI) solution developer, Apply.
This bright system will continuously monitor and control energy flows, analyzing market fluctuations and autonomously adjusting the system to recharge or discharge electricity on the grid, ensuring optimal performance and efficiency.
By strategically locating the BESS systems at existing solar power plants (SES), AJ Power has further streamlined the implementation process. Leveraging the existing infrastructure at these sites minimizes logistical challenges and enables a faster deployment timeline.
This investment in BESS technology signifies a crucial step towards building a more resilient and sustainable energy future for Latvia. As the country navigates the transition to a new energy landscape, AJ Power stands at the forefront, driving innovation and ensuring a stable, reliable energy supply.
AJ POWER Invests in Batter Systems to Stabilize the Latvian Grid
AJ POWER, a leading energy solutions provider, has made a significant six million euro investment in battery energy storage systems (BESS) at its three high-capacity solar power parks. This strategic move aims to bolster grid stability in Latvia as the country prepares for a major shift in its energy infrastructure.
We sat down with Kaspars Līcis, Head of AJ POWER’s Renewable Energy Division, to discuss this vital investment and its impact on the Latvian energy landscape.
A Crucial Step Towards Grid Resilience
The planned disconnection of the baltics from the BRALL network in February 2025 presents a unique challenge to Latvia’s energy sector. “This necessitates additional balancing capacities to ensure grid stability,” explains Līcis. “We recognized this need early on and proactively began designing and implementing these BESS systems to adapt to the changing energy landscape and actively participate in the new balancing market.” This investment, according to Līcis, is “a vital step towards ensuring a smooth transition and a secure future for Latvia’s energy supply.”
Powering Households and Balancing the Grid
These BESS installations boast considerable capacity. What will this mean for everyday life in Latvia?
“The BESS systems, with a combined capacity of nine megawatts and 18 megawatt-hours, can power the daily consumption of over 7,000 households,” states Līcis. This highlights the significant potential of BESS technology to contribute to both energy security and decentralized energy production.
Strategic Deployment & Technological Advancements
Why were these solar power plants chosen for the BESS installations?
Līcis explains, “The existing infrastructure at these solar power parks streamlined the implementation process, making it a strategic choice.” Furthermore, AJ POWER has combined advanced technical equipment with a clever control system developed in collaboration with Apply, a leading AI solutions provider. This system analyzes market fluctuations and autonomously adjusts the charging and discharging of the batteries, ensuring optimal performance and efficiency.
