AirTag locates suitcases: Airline caught in brazen lies

On AirTag is a position indicator. The GPS device can be connected to Apple’s “Woist?” network so that it can be located at any time. This is particularly useful when travelling, especially if you lose your suitcase. But one young woman, Valerie Szybala, discovered through the AirTag that she had been brazenly lied to by the airline. She has shared her full story with the public.

Luggage and AirTag lost at the airport

Valerie Szybala was on a United Airlines plane with her luggage and AirTag stowed in the hold. But when she had her feet on solid ground again and wanted to pick up her suitcase, the bad news: the piece of luggage was lost.

But the airline assured her that the suitcase would be found and delivered to her. She trusted the information and waited. After a while, she became curious and wanted to locate her suitcase via AirTag. The whole “wild” story shared them on Twitter.

Luggage found in strange apartment complex

Through the small locator, she determined that her suitcase had been in a conventional condominium for an entire day. It couldn’t be associated with a United Airlines outpost. She went.

There was no sign of her suitcase where her AirTag had sent the signal. However, she made another disturbing discovery. Near the garbage cans were two more suitcases, which she said were also from United Airlines. Although no stickers from the airline could be seen on the shared footage, the response to Szybala’s inquiry is suspicious.

Airline lies in chat

She contacted the employees via the airline’s app and confronted them with her find. The answer she received was: “Calm down, the suitcase is in the delivery service”. When Szybala persisted, the blame was laid on the supposedly faulty AirTag: “We’re sorry, we have no idea why [der AirTag] displayed there.”

In the meantime, she had also contacted the press, who followed this story with her. After all, she feared that someone would steal and empty the airline’s suitcases. That shouldn’t happen with her belongings, explained Szybala versus Mashable.

Strange text messages – all just a mistake?

After the suitcase with the Apple tracking chip made a “trip” to McDonalds and back to the apartment complex, the young American received a message. A courier service called and said her luggage and AirTag had been accidentally delivered to the wrong person in Virginia. That didn’t match the data from the locator, but Szybala finally got her suitcase back after three nerve-wracking days.

On Twitter, she is now urging people to share the story as she suspects some kind of scam behind it. United Airlines is meanwhile unsuspecting, but promises to work up the incident.

3 tips for traveling

As a result, the American never wants to travel without an AirTag again. For you and others, yours Planning a vacation for 2023also have the following tips ready:

  1. Use a tracking device in your suitcase. Without it, according to Szybala, she would not have gotten her suitcase back (so quickly).
  2. Take a photo of your luggage in advance. This way you can prove that the content belongs to you or determine if something is missing.
  3. Don’t use the delivery service. In your experience, it just gets weird. If your suitcase has been found, it’s better to collect it yourself at the airport.
