Airstrikes on Sudan’s capital intensify

Amid ongoing fighting in Sudan, airstrikes on targets in the capital Khartoum intensified in the early hours of Wednesday morning. On the fifth day of the fighting, more gunfire might also be heard, said a dpa reporter on site. As early as Tuesday evening, hopes of a possible 24-hour ceasefire, which representatives of the conflicting parties had previously announced, had been dashed.

It was the third failed ceasefire since the fighting began on Saturday. In the north-east African country, which has been politically unstable for years, the two most powerful generals and their units are fighting for supremacy. The two men have led the gold and oil-rich country of around 46 million people since a joint military coup in 2021. De facto President Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, who is the supreme commander of the army, is fighting his deputy Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo, the leader of the powerful Rapid Support Forces (RSF).

According to the United Nations, 270 people have died and 2,600 have been injured since the fighting broke out. Thousands of civilians are therefore trapped in their apartments and houses, often without electricity and without the possibility of getting food, water or medicine.
