Gatwick Airport, in London, England, canceled more than 160 international and domestic flights between September 25th and 26th following an outbreak of covid-19 affected air traffic control employees. The abnormal situation caused the administration to reduce the number of takeoffs per day to 800 until everything was normalized.
The decision to reduce flight demand aims to prevent departures from being canceled at the last minute, further increasing inconvenience for passengers and their families. Health authorities have not released the exact number of workers infected by the virus, but confirm that at least 30% of controls were dismissed for this and other reasons.
For now, there is still no information on the clinical situation of workers who tested positive for the disease, but a medical bulletin is expected to be presented in the coming days. The contamination of employees and the significant increase in the volume of infections has affected London’s second largest airport and might also harm other services.
England is not the only country to see an increase in the number of Covid-19 cases following months of decline. This increase reinforces the need for the population to adhere to some individual and collective measures in order to stop the spread of both the original Sars-CoV-2 and its main variants, such as Alpha, Beta, Gamma and Delta, for example.
To prevent Covid-19, it is important to follow some protective measures, such as:
Wear a mask whenever you leave your home or come into contact with people outside your household. Clean your hands with soap and water or alcohol gel frequently, especially following touching shared surfaces or objects. Avoid crowds and maintain physical distancing of at least 1.5 meters from other people. Cover your mouth and nose with your elbow or a disposable tissue when coughing or sneezing, and discard the tissue immediately. Do not share personal objects, such as glasses, cutlery, toothbrushes, etc. Regularly clean and disinfect surfaces and objects that are frequently touched, such as door handles, switches, cell phones, etc. Pay attention to the symptoms of Covid-19, such as fever, cough, shortness of breath, sore throat, loss of smell or taste, etc. If you experience any of these symptoms, seek medical attention and get tested for Covid-19. Follow the guidelines of health authorities and respect the restriction and social isolation measures imposed in your region.
