At this point, many will remember And Pillonelan engineer known for his designs that brought USB-C ports to iPhones and AirPods cases — as well as making them more repairable.

Taking advantage of his experience in 3D printing and precisely following his attempt to make AirPods cases more repairable, Pillonel recreated the plastic components of the accessory — also presenting a version translucent to the Beats Studio Buds+.

As detailed in the video above, Pillonel used CADsComputer aided designor computer-aided design.”>1 of AirPods Pro parts and clear resin to recreate them. From a 3D printer, he printed these components and dried them carefully with compressed air.

Then he cured the pieces and entered a laborious sanding phase done in chunks—using 400, 600, 800, and 1,000 grit sandpaper—with the pieces regularly dipped in water to aid in cleaning.

The process continued with hot air cleaning and drying to avoid mineral deposits from the water. To finalize the finish, Pillonel applied a colorless spray to the pieces.

Those interested in creating can find more information on Pillonel’s blog. Naturally, as seen above, this is not a simple process — yet, whether you like it or not, this “nudges” Apple for not making its products more customizable and, above all, repairable.
