At WWDC23, a few minutes were devoted especially to the new features of the AirPods. With the launch of the next systems, some of Apple’s headphone users will have access to new features, such as Custom Volumeo Conversation Awareness (something like “Conversation Awareness”) and the Adaptive Audiowhich combines Ambient mode with Active Noise Cancelling.
The problem is that only some users will be able to take advantage of the news, as these three new features will be compatible with the second generation AirPods Pro. Thus, the most expensive model in the line, the AirPods Maxthe only one in the circum-aural format (over-ear), will not receive these new functions — something that will certainly displease users who have invested so much in the product.
Although no official justification for the restrictions has been given, the hardware of the headphones might be a clue to some real limitation regarding resources. The second generation of AirPods Pro is the only model that has the chip H2, while the other headphones — including the Max — have the H1 or W1 (in the case of the first generation of AirPods). In this sense, even having two chips H1 (one in each earbud), Apple’s most expensive model will not have access to the advertised incremental features.
Two other novelties that will not reach the most advanced headphones are the more simplified “Siri” command (in English) and the faster automatic switching between devices. Basically, among the new features, the AirPods Max will only receive the function of activating/deactivating the mute by pressing the Digital Crown during calls.
This “forgetfulness” of the product also reveals its already relatively long time on the market. the headphones over-ear from Apple were originally released in late 2020, despite the high price (R$6,6 mil No brazil) intensifies dissatisfaction due to the successive absence of novelties.
For some time now, there have been rumors that the company will launch a new generation of AirPods Max, which may not arrive until late 2024 or early 2025. The new model may feature the H2 chip (or a more advanced one) and, with Therefore, the new features should become compatible with the more expensive phone – so potential buyers of the model may consider waiting for the launch of a new generation, given the current scenario.
