As every week, Sunday remains the privileged moment for Mark Gurman to talk about Apple via his newsletter Power On. In its latest edition published this Sunday, August 18, the journalist from Bloomberg took the time to answer the following question in his FAQ (exclusive to subscribers): โAre new AirPods still planned?โ.
Good news, we won’t have to wait long to see a new generation of Apple headphones arrive. According to its information, the AirPods 4 would be ready for September 2024. We can therefore expect a launch alongside the iPhone 16 during the traditional keynote of annual return.
In addition to this information regarding the release date of the AirPods 4, Mark Gurman reiterates the fact that the apple company would consider launching two different versions.
The project is to offer a successor to the traditional AirPods in the format open-fitlike the AirPods 3/2/1, and an improved in-ear variant that brings active noise reduction. This second option would thus allow to have the key functionality of the AirPods Pro, but at a lighter price.
Note that the journalist specifies that the launch of the AirPods 4 would put an end to the marketing of the AirPods 2 and 3. The Apple Store would thus offer these two new pairs of headphones, accompanied by the AirPods Pro 2. According to him, the AirPods Pro 3 would not be expected for some time.
The AirPods 4 would also have a different charge, with wireless charging exclusive to the earbuds with active noise reduction. One similarity would still be there: a wired USB-C charging port. They would thus follow the abandonment of Lightning operated by the AirPods Pro 2 in September 2023.
